BAC K LASH 

NOTE: 

When  m easu r i ng  the  bac k lash  or  chec k ing 
tooth  contact,  it  is  u nnecessary  that u n iversa l  

joint  is  instal l ed  and  thread  l ock  is appl ied  to 

the nut. 

• 

I nsta l l   the  magneto  cover  o n  the l eft cran kcase 

to prevent the ru n out of su b-transm ission output 
shaft. 

• 

I nsta l l  the su b-tra nsm issio n output shaft. 

• 

P lace  the  secondary  d riven  output shaft  assem­
b l y  on the cra n k case w ith the specia l too l .

• 

Set  a  dial  gauge  a s   shown  o n   the  seco ndary 
driven  beve l  gea r  a n d   measu re  the  bac k lash  by 
tu rn in g   the  d riven  beve l  gear i n  each  d i rect i o n, 

read ing the tota l  back l ash o n  the d ia l  gauge.

NOTE: 

0.05 - 0.32  m m  

(0.002 - 0 .0 1 3  i n ) 

Remove  the  cou p l i ng  and  coupl i ng  j o ints 
wh en m easuring the  backlash . 

• 

I f  the  back l ash  is  not with i n   the  spec i fication , 

the  sh ims  must  be  c h a n ged  a n d   the  bac k l ash 
shou ld be re-c h ecked u nt i l  correct. 

Refer  to  the  chart  at  right  for  a p p ropriate 

changes. 

NOTE: 

When  changing  the  sh ims, measure  the  th ick­

ness  of  old  sh ims.  Using  the  th ickness of the 

old  sh ims  as  a  gu ide,  adjust  the  backlash  by 

referring  to  the chart at r ight.
