GEN ERAL

This sec tion pro vides in stal la tion in for ma tion for MkVII
Downmast S-Band Trans ceiver.
2 Kelvin Hughes, or appointed agents, contracts only to
supply the equipment, supervise the installation and
final connection of the equipment. The installation must be
made by a fully qualified Kelvin Hughes Radar Engineer.

Forward planning for positioning the various units of
the Radar must be made before any installation work is
carried out. A full survey is required in order to establish the
ship’s fitment. This may be arranged with the Technical
Department of Kelvin Hughes or one of the approved
agencies. Details of Agencies worldwide can be found in
Publication KH 400.

TRANS CEIVER AND TURNING MECH A NISMS
6 The MkVII S-Band downmast Trans ceiver can be used
with the MkVI Turning Mechanism (low speed - 25 rpm
(CAE-A42) or high speed - 40 rpm (CAE-A41) versions). For
completeness the installation procedure in this document
uses the MkVI Turning Mechanism. Two versions of the
turning mechanism are provided:
(1) 25 rpm CAE-A42 for normal applications.
(2) 50 rpm CAE-A41 for high speed craft.

The elec tron ics for the downmast transceiver are
housed in a sep a rate bulk head mounted en clo sure.
The downmast trans ceiver is con nected to the turn ing
mech a nism, via semi-rigid coaxial cable.

Both versions of the MkVI Turning Mechanism utilise a
bulkhead mounted Soft Start Unit (CZZ-A14)

Electrical supplies are to be isolated to any part of the
platfor m when mounting an ant enna/tur ning
mechanism. A suitable safety platform or harness should be
used to avoid personal injury when working aloft.
10 Electrical supplies in the vicinity of the transceiver are
to be isolated during installation.

A working platform is to be provided for installing or
servicing the assembly. This should be positioned
approximately 1 metre below the base of the Turning
Mechanism housing with a guard rail surrounding it.
12 The Antenna and Turning Mechanism must be hoisted
to the fixing position using a secured block and tackle
or rope strops.
13 Safety personnel must ensure that persons do not
encroach on the area of work.
14 The Antenna and Turning Mechanism MUST NOT be
lifted by the array, but the complete unit secured and
hoisted evenly.

The Upmast Turn ing Mech a nism should be in stalled in
such a po
si tion where Blind Arcs, caused by
ob struc tions, i.e. masts, fun nels etc, are elim i nated or
mini mised. Fun nels, crosstrees and other large ob struc tions
can also re flect en ergy and give rise to spu ri ous echo re turns
es pe cially in close prox im ity to land.
16 The Upmast Turning Mechanism must not be
mounted where the temperature exceeds 70
o
C.
17 The Upmast Turn ing Mech a nism must be kept clear of
ship’s flex i ble com mu ni ca tion ae ri als to avoid dam age
to both.
18 The Upmast Turn ing Mech a nism must be mounted
more than 914 mm above any flat sur face, when the
flat sur face is greater than the di am e ter swept by the
an tenna.
19 The Upmast Turn ing Mech a nism must not be
po si tioned in the close prox im ity of any mag netic
com pass or D/F ae rial, etc.
