Changing MCS-to-Workstation Connections
A–3
❐
Connection methods
Connection methods between an MCS and an MCS
workstation can be direct or dialed:
■
A direct connection requires a null-modem
cable or adapter, which you must supply (the
supplied COM1 cable is a null modem cable). You
may also need line drivers or similar devices,
depending on your installation.
To help ensure a reliable transfer channel when
building your own cables, do not exceed the
maximum cable length specified by the cable
manufacturer for a direct connection, typically,
50 feet (15.2 meters).
To create a direct connection, refer to the next
section, “Using a Direct Connection.”
■
A dialed connection requires two
Hayes-compatible modems (AT command set),
one at the workstation and one at the MCS. The
dialing method can be manual or automatic.
You can create—using a Windows text
editor—your own modem command file. The
command file provides the initialization string
required for specific modems. The user
documentation for your modem provides the
required information.
To create a dialed connection, refer to “Using a
Dialed Connection” on page A–5.
