Motor Control Center Definitions
NEMA
A Motor Control Center is defined by NEMA Per ICS-2-322 as
being...
“A floor-mounted assembly of one or more enclosed vertical
sections having a horizontal common power bus and princi-
pally containing combination motor control units. These units
are mounted one above the other in the vertical sections. The
sections may incorporate vertical buses connected to the
common power bus, thus extending the common power
supply to the individual units. Units may also connect direct-
ly to the common power bus by suitable wiring.”
As defined above, a Motor Control Center principally contains
combination motor control units as distinguished from switch-
boards, which principally contain branch protective devices
such as circuit breakers and fusible disconnects.
NEMA defines a Combination Motor Control Unit per ICS-1-
322 as...
“A combination motor control unit shall include externally
operable circuit disconnecting means, branch-circuit overcur-
rent protection, and a magnetic motor controller with asso-
ciated auxiliary devices when used. The disconnecting means
and branch-circuit overcurrent protection shall consist of a
fusible disconnecting device or circuit breaker. If the latter is
used, it shall be either an inverse time (thermal-magnetic or
dual magnetic) or an instantaneous magnetic type. The motor
controller shall include motor and branch-circuit protection
unless equivalent protection is otherwise provided.”
Two sets of externally operable circuit disconnecting means,
each with branch circuit overcurrent protection and magnetic
motor controller, may be mounted in a single compartment to
form a dual unit.
Branch protective devices are allowed in a Motor Control
Center per NEMA and are defined as Feeder Tap Units per
ICS-2-322...
“A feeder tap unit shall include externally operable circuit dis-
connecting means and branch-circuit overcurrent protection,
principally used for non-motor loads. Two sets of circuit dis-
connecting means with branch-circuit overcurrent protection
may be mounted in a single compartment to form a dual unit.”
In addition, a control center may contain any combination of
equipment such as the following:
(a) Full-voltage non-reversing combination motor control unit.
(b) Full-voltage reversing combination motor control unit.
(c) Full-voltage non-reversing two-speed single-winding com-
bination motor control unit.
(d) Full-voltage non-reversing two-speed two-winding combi-
nation motor control unit.
(e) Part-winding non-reversing combination motor control unit.
(f) Reduced-voltage single step non-reversing combination
motor control unit.
(g) Solid-state reduced voltage starters (Nordic).
(h) Variable frequency drive units.
(i) Wye-delta non-reversing combination motor control unit.
(j) Lighting distribution panelboard.
(k) Feeder tap units.
(l) Incoming line fusible isolating switch.
(m) Incoming line air circuit breaker.
(n) Control transformer.
(o) Lighting transformer.
(p) Special equipment assemblies such as programmable
controllers.
The foregoing equipment may contain such items as push
buttons, selector switches, indicating lights, control trans-
formers, control circuit fuses, and auxiliary contacts mounted
as an integral part of the above units.
UL
UL defines a motor control center similarly to NEMA. In addi-
tion UL 845 discusses use of associated auxiliary devices and
panelboards to be a part of a motor control center. UL will
allow use of branch circuit protective units in a motor control
center provided their use does not make up a major portion of
the motor control center.
Motor control centers are rated at maximum of 600V. The hor-
izontal common bus per NEMA will have continuous current-
carrying capacities of 600, 800, 1000, 1200, or higher as
required by particular application. The vertical bus extensions
installed in a section shall have a minimum continuous current
of 300A.
