Explanation of the charging function:
The Alpha charger is ideal for cyclic and standby charging of rechargeable lead-acid batteries. The device works
in three different stages. An LED display with three different colors shows you the mode in which the charger is
currently located (see explanation on next page).
Unlike other chargers, this unit operates with constant current in the first mode. If the battery voltage rises to the
maximum cyclic voltage (14.7V) during charging, the unit will not immediately go into standby mode.
Instead, a timer function starts while the device remains in a constant voltage mode (14.7V) until the selected timer
time (e.g., 2 hours) has elapsed. When the timer starts, the battery is normally charged at about 80-95% and can
be used as needed. The timer „boost“ period ensures that the remaining 10-20% of the battery is charged to full
capacity in a very short time.
The LED display changes color from red to yellow when the timer starts, followed by another change to green
when the timer period is over. At this point, the constant voltage level is reduced to a safe level so that the battery
can remain in the charger indefinitely without the risk of overcharging (13.8V). This is the standby mode.
The charger works highly efficiently with flyback technology (> 80%), giving an output power of 40W. Due to the
very low creep loss (<100uA), it is possible to leave the battery connected to the charger for more than six months
without power, without the battery losing more than 0.4Ah of its capacity. A new charge cycle begins when the
charge current reaches the constant current level (e.g., 2.7A).
This is the case when the battery voltage drops due to a connected load. The charger will therefore automatically
charge batteries used as a backup system up to maximum capacity.
