Operation
SPB Operation Manual
5. Have the crane operator apply very light tension.
6. Attach a tag rope, at least twenty feet long, to the
pipe arm on the end of section number three (just
above the hopper) to help in guiding the boom after
it is detached (Figure 62).

Sudden release boom hazard! Do
not apply more than light tension
to overhead crane cables until the
boom is detached.
If cable tension is too high, the crane will cre-
ate hazardous spring tension as it bends toward
the boom, and when the boom releases from the
truck, it will be pulled away and bounce uncon-
trollably from the crane.
7. Remove the safety clips and mount pins from the
front and back side of the turret and also the lower
turret clamp (Figure 63).

Support Bolts

8. Use extreme caution while separating the boom.
Keep light tension on the cables, and pry the boom
apart from the tower if necessary.
Do not place hands or other body
parts between the boom sections or
between the boom and any other sol-
id object.
9. After the boom releases, guide it slowly away from
the truck. Movement should be slow and straight
back, being careful to clear the tower with the low-
er boom and hydraulic hoses. Also, watch the tip
hose bracket on the bottom of section number four
to be sure that it clears the forward and rear boom
cradles
It may be useful to wrap a Come-Along around
the boom pipeline on either section and attach it
to a fifth cable on the crane hook. When attempt
-
ing to align the holes for re-installing the main
support bolts, the Come-Along can be tightened
to slightly tilt the boom or the tower.
Crushing hazard! Workers must use
caution when standing between the
cab and tower during the picking or
landing of the boom.
If you remove the two front pins last and plan to
guide the tower away from the cab as it is picked,
your entire body must be positioned below the
tower to prevent being pinned between the cab
and boom.
10.
When the boom is lifted to the desired loca-
tion, guide the boom to the mast with the long tag
rope.
11.
Align the holes in the adapter plate with the
holes in the turret, and install the mounting pins
and safety clips, beginning with the front pins (Fig-
ure 64), which would be nearest the cab while the
boom is on the truck.
12.
Remove the cables, chains or straps.
13.
Reconnect the hydraulic (as color coded)
