Preparing for the Job
Personal Protection
Concrete is made from lime, which is very alkaline. If
it stays on your skin long enough, it will cause severe
burns, and in extreme cases the affected skin will simply
fall off. Because of this, always wear water proof steel
toed work boots and gloves. There are boots made es-
pecially for concrete work that will protect your feet from
lime and accidental impact.
Wear a hard hat at all times to protect yourself from
falling objects on the job site.
Safety goggles protect you from getting splashed con-
crete in your eyes. Anytime that there is danger of rico-
cheted rocks or sand (when shotcreting, for example),
wear a full face shield.
Snug fitting work clothes will help prevent accidents in
-
volving moving parts.
Concrete pumps may generate higher sound pressure
levels than O.S.H.A. allows for constant exposure.
You can protect yourself by wearing hearing protection
when on or near the concrete pump.
When mixing grout, or anytime that there will be air-
borne cement or other fine powder nearby, wear breath
-
ing protection.

Pipeline and Clamps
Use the following checklist to determine your equip-
ment needs:
• Pipe sections
• Adapter pipes (If all pipe ends are not identical,
see the information on Weld-on End/Coupling
Comparison in the Appendix of this manual.)
• End hoses
• Reducers
• Clamps for all pipe end styles and sizes
• Clamp pins
Inspect all pipe and pipe accessories for condition.
Keep in mind the pressure rating of your unit when you
inspect the condition of pipe accessories. See the infor-
mation on minimum pipe wall thickness in the Appendix
of this manual.
Tools and Accessories
Below is a recommended list of pumping tools and ac-
cessories:
• Shovel
• Barrel for mixing slurry
• Pipeline lubricant, either commercial lubricating
powder or portland cement for mixing slurry.
• Grease gun and grease tubes
•
Spray can filled with form oil
• Cleanout balls
• Water hose and nozzle
• Cleanout rake
• Working lamps for night work
• An approved air blowout cap (See the Safety
Manual for blowout cap requirements)
• 5-gallon bucket
• Hand tools
• 4–5-lb. sledge hammer
Of all these items, the sledge hammer is the tool you
will use most often. It can be used to set up and remove
pipeline; to knock the wedges out of the tapered bend
for cleanout; to tap pipe to locate blockages; to loosen
rusted nuts and bolts; and to knock out concrete that
has set up in clamps and hoppers. Many pump opera-
tors install the hammer head on a steel pipe, an ideal
tool for installing pipeline because the handle can be
used to pry clamp handles up or down.
