You cut perpendicular to or across the grain of workpiece.

Dado (3)
A non-through cut, that you make with special blades, and produc-
es a rectangular-sided slot in workpiece. Can be a through-Dado or
stopped Dado.

Groove (4)
Like a Dado cut but you cut parallel to the grain.

Rabbet (5)
A non-through cut, where you create a rectangular notch along the
length of workpiece.
