Performance monitor options
The performance monitor is a mandatory additional device, for checking the operating efficiency of the
transceiver. This unit makes it possible to check, if for example, the magnetron has degraded in power,
water entered the antenna or receiver gets noisy.
Additional it is a useful help, to adjust receiver tuning to an optimum, in case that suitable targets are
missed, to get a sufficient length of tuning bar graph.
The actual test image depends on the type of radar scanner in use.
4.1.1
Sperry or Litton scanner
Following basic parameter must be set:
- Transmit mode
- Presentation mode to Head Up [H UP]
- Range to 12NM
- Long Pulses transmission pulse rate (LP)
- Rain and Sea clutter in manual mode and set to minimum
- Gain set to an optimum level (if setting is too high or too low,
performance indications may not be visible.)
Click menu button [RADAR] to open menu ‘RADAR SELECT’.
Click the headline ‘RADAR SELECT’ and select ‘Performance Monitor’.
- The menu shows a Tune bar.
Click into the tune bar and first move it to minimum. Then move slowly to right, to find a setting for a
maximum of performance indication. A correct Tuning setting is indicated by the appearance of four
performance monitor arcs in radar screen. These arcs are approximately 0.3NM apart and start at a range
scale of 8 NM. The arcs extend from 290° to 320° (S Band), or from 155° to 185° (X Band), with respect to
the heading line. The precise bearing value will alter depending on the Heading line offset value.
INPORTANT!
If it is not possible to get all four arcs visible, the radar performance will be degraded. The arcs are spaced at
5dB intervals. If during operation performance decreases below the second arc, it shows a 10dB drop in
performance. Then a radar service must be called at next service facility.
