Listening in MIDNIGHT listening mode
This feature makes it possible to get excellent surround sound effects even when listening at low volumes. It
can be used with a variety of surround sound sources and play soundtracks so that the quieter sounds are
audible while the noisier sounds don’t become overly loud or distorted. It does this by bringing all the sounds in
a given soundtrack closer together in volume. Compare this feature with the DYNAMIC RANGE CONTROL (only
for Dolby Digital sources) on p. 35.
Press the MIDNIGHT button on the remote
control’s Amplifier MAIN screen or on the
front panel.
Each press switches MIDNIGHT LISTENING mode on or
off.

• The effect adjusts itself automatically in
accordance with the volume level.
• You can’t use the MIDNIGHT LISTENING mode

External decoder playback
This feature allows you to connect an external decoder to enjoy certain types of specialized discs.
Press the EXTERNAL 5.1 CH button on the
remote control’s Amplifier SUB screen. On the
front panel press the EXTERNAL DECODER IN
button.
Each press switches the input between the previous mode
and EXTERNAL DECODER.

When EXTERNAL DECODER is selected only the
volume level and channel levels can be set. All of
this unit’s other features (DSP modes,
ADVANCED THEATER modes, DIRECT mode,
TONE controls, etc.), as well as the PHONO
modes, cannot be used. Also, all speaker settings
and other setup settings have no effect.
