flashhook
The act of pressing momentarily and releasing a telephone’s
hookswitch. In VoiceSpan, this is treated as a request to change
to and from data-only mode.
flow control
A process in which devices stop and start the flow of data in a
network to avoid losing data.

handshaking
The exchange of predetermined codes and signals (tones) to
establish a connection between two modems.

idle state
A state in which the modem’s configuration options can be
modified or commands can be issued to the modem using
AT commands.
