Device simulation and Device Link
Introduction
Device simulation is the simulation by the PRISMAsync controller of:
• The output colours of another device, or
• A standard printing condition.
The Device Simulation functionality is available for document printing only. It is provided for both
PostScript and for PDF input files. The PDF input files can be printed with or without APPE.
The gamut of the simulated output device must be smaller than the gamut of the PRISMAsync
controller for successful simulation of the colour behaviour. For example, the PRISMAsync
controller can simulate the output colours of Jetstream inkjet printers.
You need a license to enable device simulation in the PRISMAsync controller.
Basics
The normal colour management in PRISMAsync can reproduce colour values from different input
profiles. The input profile RGB or input profile CMYK of the input colour spaces are shown in the
left column of the figure "Three forms of colour management" below. The normal colour
management is shown in the top row "Ordinary output profile" of the figure:
• The input profile is used to convert the input colour space to the standard Profile Connection
Space (PCS).
• The output profile for the imagePRESS C7010VPS series is used to convert from PCS to the
engine colour space. The engine colour space always uses CMYK values.
The PRISMAsync controller can use two types of "composite output profiles":
1. The combination of a simulation profile with Device Link. See the second row "Composite
output profiles with Device Link" in the figure below.
2. The combination of a simulation profile, applied twice in opposite directions, in combination
with an output profile. See the third row "Composite output profile without Device Link" in the
figure below.
The “composite output profiles” can be used next to the normal output profiles. The “composite
output profiles” convert from PCS to CMYK values like the normal output profiles.
NOTE
If the CMYK input profile is already defined in the simulation colour space, conversion from
CMYK input profile to PCS and then from PCS to simulation colour space is skipped.
In case of device simulation there are three colour spaces involved:
1. The input colour space on the left side of the figure.
2. The engine colour space on the right side of the figure used by the imagePRESS C7010VPS
series.
3. The simulation colour space. The colour conversion to the colour space of the simulated
device is done by means of a simulation profile.
• In case no Device Link profile is used to convert from the colour space of the simulated
device to the engine colour space:
The simulation profile is applied twice, in two different directions. See the entire lower row
"Composite output profile without Device Link" in the figure.
Firstly, the simulation profile is applied once to convert the colour space from PCS to
simulation colour space. Secondly, the simulation profile applied to convert the simulation
colour space to PCS again. The result is that the colours are "squeezed" into the output
profile.
