5 Getting started
In this section, you will first learn how to prepare the X-ray system so that it is ready to
inspect samples. To help you with your first X-ray inspections, this section also details the
basic steps that are required to inspect a sample using X-rays and save an image ready for
analysis.
To begin, you need to switch on the X-ray system and then prepare the X-ray source
(condition) so that it achieves a stable operating voltage, and produces a steady image of the
samples under inspection. Once the X-ray source is conditioned, you can inspect samples
using the X-ray system.
Do not leave the system unattended while the source is conditioned.
5.1 Power up sequence
Use the following procedure to switch on the X-ray system.
To power up the X-ray system, follow these steps:
1. Turn the main power on at the wall.
2. Press the SYSTEM POWER button, located on the control console and ensure that the
SYSTEM POWER lamp is illuminated.
3. Turn the INTERLOCK key on the control console to the 'ON' position.
4. Turn the LCD monitor(s) on.
The computer should automatically boot up when the system is powered, if not turn on
the computer.
5. Enter the password if the PC is password protected.
When the system is supplied, the PC is not password protected. The
default supervisor password is
supervisor .
6. Login to the Inspect-X application, which should load automatically.
7. Press the X-RAY POWER button.
8. Wait for the X-ray status window in Inspect-X to illuminate green.
This initialisation will take 2–10 minutes depending on how long the
system has been off. When the filament has been changed, this may
take a little longer.
The X-ray source must now be conditioned before you can use the
X-ray system to inspect samples.
