Top Cover Removal / Replacement
Use this procedure to remove the RF650VPN top cover (e.g., as the first step for all upgrade procedures).
1.
Turn off RF650VPN power and remove the RF650VPN power cord.
2.
Remove all of the RF650VPN back panel cable connections.
3.
Remove the three retaining screws that secure the top cover to the chassis. Save the seven retaining
screws for top cover replacement.
4.
Carefully slide the top cover forward and then off of the chassis, being careful not to catch the top
cover on any cables or to bump any of the pc board components. You may want to use a small flat
blade screwdriver to gently pry the top cover away from the chassis at the retaining screw hole near
the middle of the back panel.
5.
Perform the desired upgrade following the instructions in the following sections.
6.
To replace the top cover, perform steps 1-3 above in reverse order.
Upgrades
This section provides the information needed to perform RF650VPN field upgrades.
Caution: Use industry-standard grounding supplies and procedures so as to not damage pc board or
upgrade components.
Processor Upgrade
The standard 566 Mhz INTEL
Ò
Celeron
Ô
processor can be upgraded in the field to a 750 MHz Celeron
processor, to a Pentium-class 566 MHz processor, or to an 800 MHz Pentium3
Ô
processor.
1.
Remove the RF650VPN top cover using the procedure earlier in this chapter.
2.
Unplug the fan power plug from the
FAN1
connector on the pc board.
3.
Gently press down on the top of the metal fan retaining strip and unlatch it from the plastic retaining
tab. Fan1 is mounted directly on top of the beige plastic Processor housing. Carefully remove Fan1
and the metal fan retaining strip and put them in a safe place for future replacement.
4.
Unlatch the Processor housing by carefully moving the securing lever on the right side out away from
the housing and lifting upward; this moves the securing lever from the LOCK to the FREE position, as
printed on the beige plastic Processor housing.
5.
Very carefully remove the existing processor from the processor socket.
6.
Carefully insert the upgrade processor, following the processor manufacturer's instructions.
7.
Perform steps 1 through 4 in reverse order.
8.
Power up the RF650VPN and refer to Chapter 2 - Configuration.
Memory Upgrade
The standard 128 Mb memory module can be upgraded in the field to 256 Mb.
1. Remove the RF650VPN top cover using the procedure earlier in this chapter.
2. Pull back on the beige plastic DIMM retaining tabs on both sides of the DIMM holder at M1.
3. Carefully remove the existing DIMM card.
4. Insert the upgrade DIMM card following the manufacturer's documentation.
Hard Disk Drive Upgrade
The standard 2.5", 10 GB EIDE Hard Disk (HD) Drive can be upgraded in the field to a higher capacity
hard drive.
1. Remove the RF650VPN top cover using the procedure earlier in this chapter.
2. Disconnect the HD drive ribbon cable at the existing HD drive; note that the HD drive ribbon cable
connects to all of the HD drive pins except the two sets of two pins on the far right .
