Safe distance from slopes and pits
Erect the crane at a safe distance from slopes and pits. The distance also
depends on the type of ground if the slopes and pits are not supported.
Rule of thumb:
If you are working on
non-cohesive
or
filled-in
ground, the safety distance ( a ) must be twice
as large as the pit depth ( b ).
a = 2 x b
If you are working on
cohesive
,
undisturbed
ground, the safe distance ( a ) must be as great
as the depth of the pit ( b ).
a = 1 x b
The safe distance is measured from the base
of the pit (
3 ).
In addition to this the safe distance ( d ) between
the outrigger pad ( 1 ) or substructure ( 2 ) and the
edge of the pit ( 4 ) must always be more than
2.00 m (6.6 ft).
