DILUTER-DEMAND CREW
OXYGEN MASKS
The crew are provided with diluter-demand,
quick-donning oxygen masks (see Figure
17-3). These masks hang on the aft cockpit
par tition behind and outboard on the pilot
and copilot seats. They are held in the armed
position by spring tension clips, and can be
donned immediately with one hand. The di-
luter-demand crew masks deliver oxygen to
the user only upon inhalation. Consequently,
there is no loss of oxygen when the masks
are plugged in and the PULL ON handle is
pulled out, even though oxygen is immedi-
ately available upon demand.
A small lever on each diluter-demand oxy-
gen mask permits the selection of two modes
of operation: NORMAL and 100%. In the
NORMAL position, air from the cockpit is
mixed with the oxygen supplied through the
mask. This reduces the rate of depletion of
the oxygen supply, and it is more comfor t-
able to use than 100% aviator’s breathing
oxygen. However, in the event of smoke or
f u m e s i n t h e c o c k p i t , t h e 1 0 0 % p o s i t i o n
should be used to prevent the breathing of
contaminated air. For this reason, the se-
lector levers should be left in the 100% po-
sition when the masks are not in use so the
masks are always ready for maximum emer-
gency use.
PLUG-IN MASKS
The plug-in oxygen masks in the cabin (see
17-2) are designed to be adjustable to f it the
average person with minimum leakage of
oxygen. To don the mask, f it the nose and
m o u t h p i e c e ove r t h e f a c e a n d a d j u s t t h e
elastic headband over the head to hold the
mask f ir mly in place. Inser t the f itting in
one of the oxygen outlets in the overhead
cavity, push in f ir mly, and tur n clockwise
approximately one-quar ter tur n to lock it in
place. If oxygen is available (the system is
turned on and the oxygen cylinder charged),
t h e r e d f l ow i n d i c a t o r w i l l m ove a n d t h e
green portion will come into view. The mix-
ing bag will inflate with breathing. Breath
nor mally. System eff iciency is deter mined
by the f it of the oxygen mask. Make cer tain
the masks f it properly and are in good con-
dition. The hose plug must be disconnected
to stop the flow of oxygen.
There are cer tain impor tant considerations
any time oxygen is in use. Do not use com-

items such as chapstick, lipstick, women’s

neously ignite in the presence of oxygen.
These items should be removed before using
oxygen. No smoking should be allowed in the
air plane when oxygen is in use.
OXYGEN SUPPLY CYLINDER
Oxygen for flight at high altitudes is sup-
plied by a cylinder mounted behind the aft
pressure bulkhead. The cylinder is f illed by
a valve accessible through an access door on
the right side of the aft fuselage. The high-
pressure system has two pressure gages, one
on the copilot’s RH sub-panel in the cockpit
for in-flight use (Figure 17-7), and one ad-
jacent to the f iller valve for checking the
pressure of the system during f illing (Figure
17-8). The cylinder is available in three dif-
ferent capacities: 22 cubic feet, 49 cubic
feet, or 66 cubic feet.
