Preparation for cleaning and
sterilization
1. Immediately after a procedure, wipe the
instruments thoroughly with a lint-free,
disposable cloth to remove all heavy
soiling.
2. Contain and transport the instruments to
the decontamination area for cleaning.
3. If immediate cleaning is not feasible,
place the instruments in containers and
soak for no longer than one hour with a
mild/neutral pH enzymatic cleaning
solution (e.g. Enzol), diluted to proper
concentration with water per manufac-
turer's instructions. Immediate soaking
is necessary to prevent blood protein,
and other contaminants from drying on
the instruments.
Cleaning Instructions for
Bipolar Instruments
Caution:
WEAR PROTECTIVE GLOVES,
CLOTHING AND A FACE MASK FOR CLEAN-
ING OF CONTAMINATED INSTRUMENTS.
CAUTION:
Use of hot water (greater than
120˚F [49˚C]) will alter the composition of
organic materials (blood and tissue) making
them difficult to remove.
1. Disassemble all bipolar instruments by
following the instructions in this manual
prior to cleaning.
2. Thoroughly rinse the instruments to
remove all gross debris.
3. Completely immerse the instruments in
a mild/neutral pH enzymatic cleaning
solution (e.g. Enzol) diluted to proper
concentration per manufacturer's instruc-
tions. Fill all lumens with cleaning solution.
KARL STORZ does not recommend the
use of detergents alone, as they contain
high concentrations of surfactants which
may leave a film on the instruments.
