Inspection of Bipolar Instruments
Inspection of KARL STORZ Bipolar Instru-
ments for signs of damage should be perfor-
med before and after every surgical proce-
dure. All instruments should be examined
for full function prior to use. All moving parts,
such as jaws, valves, handles, etc., should
be easily operable and free of blemishes. All
instruments should be checked for proper
alignment and loose screws. Please refer to
operation and handling instructions for each
type of bipolar instrument at the end of this
manual.
WARNING: Any damage to the insu-
lation of the instrument or the
cable, such as dents, scratches,
burns, cracking or splitting, may
allow electrical current to leak and
cause electrical shocks or burns to
the patient and/or physician.
All Bipolar Instruments:
Examine the
insulation surrounding the distal tip of the
instrument, there should be no chips, cracks
or burn marks in the ceramic insulation at
the distal end of the instrument. Examine the
bipolar cord connector at the proximal end
of the instrument, the metal tip and ceramic
insulation rings must not be loose or
cracked.
Bipolar Cables:
Use ONLY bipolar cables
with bipolar instruments. The insulation
should be intact along the entire length of
the cables. There should be no breakage or
separation of the insulation along the length
of the cable or where it joins the connector.
There should be no chips, cracks or burn
marks in the cable.
WARNING:
Do not use the bipolar
instruments or cables if any signs of
damage are present.
KARL STORZ recom-
mends replacing bipolar cables every 3
months if used for more than 2-3 procedures
weekly.
