Solving software problems
Table 4: Troubleshooting: Software problems
If the problem is:
Here’s what to do:
Computer automatically turns off instead of
entering Standby.
Make sure the Standby timer is set to a shorter period of time than the
Automatic Power Off timer.
You hear 3 beeps when you turn off the
computer or try to suspend.
Sometimes installing new software changes the information your computer
uses to start. Installing new software sometimes changes your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file. If you installed new software, make sure the following
line is still in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, and “REM” does not appear at the
beginning of the line:
C:\IBMTOOLS\IBMPFILE.EXE
Computer doesn’t go into Standby or
Automatically Power Off when the set time has
elapsed.
1. Make sure you don’t touch the mouse or keyboard, and don’t start a
program that involves using the hard disk, such as a Windows 95 screen
saver. These activities make the timer start over.
2. Make sure AutoPlay is disabled or BIOS checking of hard disk and CD-ROM
drives is disabled. When both AutoPlay and hard disk and CD-ROM drive
checking are enabled, Rapid Resume detects activity in the CD-ROM drive
and keeps the computer from going into Standby and Automatic Power Off.
For information about hard disk and CD-ROM checking, see “Rapid Resume
advanced options” on page 40.
3. If the computer does not automatically turn off, make sure the Automatic
Power Off option is enabled in the Rapid Resume Manager or on the Rapid
Resume menu of the Setup Utility. For instructions on using the Setup
Utility, see “Using the Setup Utility” on page 29.
4. Allow a few minutes more than the specified time. Windows 95 periodically
accesses the hard disk for memory swapping and this activity resets the
Standby timer. Windows 95 might access the hard disk for a short time after
you last touched your computer.
Note
: If any of these problems continue after taking the actions listed, check your online Aptiva Helper or the Guide to HelpWare
and All the Extras folder for information on obtaining service.
