Would you like to transfer a file between computers without 
copying it to a diskette—a method humorously referred to as 
“sneakernet”? Would you like to access the Internet at the same 
time as someone else in your household without two separate 
phone lines? Or would you like to play a multiplayer “head-to-
head” game with someone in your home? All of these things and 
more are possible when you connect your computers on a home 
network.

A home network allows two or more computers to share a single 
printer, Zip drive, scanner, Internet connection, or other 
peripheral device, as well as Internet access. These advantages 
are economical as well as convenient and fun.

In this chapter, you will learn the concepts of home networking 
and hardware/software requirements for setting up a home 
network.
