2.3 Auxiliary Engine
Throttle Control Modes
The engine control panel controls the starting,
running and stopping of the engine. Digital gauges
in the panel allow the operator to monitor engine
RPM and important systems. Electronic engine
controls monitor critical engine functions providing
operator warning alarms and/or engine shutdown
to prevent costly engine repairs.
The Aux engine control panel provides two modes
to set engine speed. MANUAL mode, which allows
the operator to select constant engine operating
RPM for the desired pressure, or AUTOMATIC
mode, which automatically drops engine RPM to
idle when the DUMP VALVE switch is turned OFF
and advances engine RPM to the preset operating
speed when the DUMP VALVE switch is ON.
In automatic mode, the Hydro-Throttle electronic
controller on the UHP pump manifold monitors
pressure to the blasting head and sends a signal
to the engine controller to automatically advance
engine speed when high pressure is supplied to
the blasting head or decrease engine speed to idle
when the high pressure to the blasting head stops.
The operator should consider the requirements of
the current removal project and select the mode
that works best in that situation. The following
is a brief description of each mode.
Manual Mode:
When the controller is set to MANUAL mode, the
Hydro-Throttle controller on the UHP pump mani-
fold is bypassed and the auxiliary engine remains
at the operating RPM set by the operator when the
DUMP VALVE switch is turned OFF. This allows the
water blasting system to develop full pressure im-
mediately when the DUMP VALVE switch is turned
ON. Because full pressure is immediately available
to the blasting head, MANUAL mode is the desired
position in most operations.
Automatic Mode:
When the controller is set to AUTOMATIC mode,
the Hydro-Throttle controller on the UHP pump
manifold is activated and continuously monitors
UHP pressure to the blasting head. The sensor in
the Hydro-Throttle sends a signal to the engine
controller to automatically advance engine speed
to the preset operating RPM programmed in the
controller when the DUMP VALVE switch is turned
ON, supplying high pressure to the blasting head.
The Hydro-Throttle sends a signal to the engine
controller to decrease engine speed to idle when
the DUMP VALVE switch is turned OFF and high
pressure to the blast head stops.
The computerized engine controller increases or
decreases engine speed gradually, so full pres-
sure is not immediately available when the DUMP
VALVE switch is turned ON to resume blasting
operations. Consequently, automatic mode may
not be desirable in some operations.
