In general, low birefringence samples result in small signals on the lock-in amplifiers
and high birefringence samples result in larger signals. Using a lower sensitivity
range allows the lock-in to acquire smaller signals with finer resolution. Using a
higher sensitivity range allows the lock-in to measure larger birefringence.
If the sample birefringence creates a signal that is out of the range of the lock-in
sensitivity, a dialog box will pop up indicating an error. 0.1562 V is a good general
setting for low birefringence samples. 1.25 V should cover the entire measurement
range of the instrument but will not be quite as sensitive for low birefringence
measurements.
To change the sensitivity setting, go to the
HLIAs
tab. Click on the

to change the setting.
Changing the Stage Distance Units
To change the distance units used in the birefringence plot area of the Exicor main
window, go to the
Settings
tab then go to the
Stage Settings
section and adjust the
parameter in the
Stage Distance Units
field.
The available stage distance units are:
•
millimeters
(mm)
•
centimeters
(cm)
•
inches (in).
The default is mm.
When you change the stage distance units, the birefringence plot is redrawn and
references to positions in the Interactive and Automatic Scan panels are updated.
The new units are reflected in the
Grid Spacing
field in the Exicor main window.
Changing the Grid Spacing
The default grid spacing (step size of the X-Y-Motion Stage) in the birefringence plot
area is 50mm. The
Grid Spacing
field is located on the main window and in the
System Parameters window. Click on the
▲
or
▼
arrows to change the grid
spacing or enter a number in the field and push the Tab key.
The new grid spacing value does not take effect until you select

or click
on the
Start Scan
button and start the scan.
Stage Home Position Offset
The stage home position refers to the location where the stage moves to upon
starting the Exicor software. This position is used as the 0,0 position for sample
measurements. The stage offset
fields are located under the
Stage Settings
section of the
Settings
tab. Click on the
Get X Y
button to set the home position to
