NOTES GENERIC OBD II - ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS
A major reason for the development of the New Generation
Star (NGS) tester was to meet the requirements of the new
EPA OBD II requirements for continuous monitoring of
emissions and related systems. Among other requirements,
OBD II calls for standardized emission codes and a
standardized means of accessing them. NGS meets these
requirements.
The Ford NGS program card covers a wide range of tests that
may need to be completed as part of proper emissions control.
The generic OBD II functions are more limited because they
are designed to apply to all vehicles by all manufacturers. In
general, use the generic OBD II functions only if you need
freeze frame data or if you are diagnosing emissions concerns
on a non-Ford vehicle.
SELECTING AN OBD II EEC-V VEHICLE
The generic OBD II functions module is designed so that you
do not have to select a vehicle prior to utilization.
When NGS is connected to an EEC-V vehicle and powered
up, it begins to search for the appropriate link to determine
whether it is connected to an EEC-V, or other OBD II vehicle.
If the link is found, NGS allows you to proceed into the generic
OBD II functions module. If the link is not found, NGS displays
an error screen, explaining to you the possible causes for not
finding the link. Upon linking to the EEC-V system, NGS begins
to communicate with the vehicles’ processors to determine
which PlDs are available and which PlDs are not available.
