GLOSSARY-2
GLOSSARY
GLOSSARY
AX4S: Automatic 4-speed synchronous transaxle.
BANK 1: Fuel Bank 1, for Bank-Fired injector vehicles (trucks).
BANK 2: Fuel Bank 2, for Bank-Fired injector vehicles (trucks).
BARO: Barometric Pressure signal indicates the pressure of the surrounding air at any given
temperature and altitude.
Base Idle: Idle rpm determined by the throttle lever hardset on the throttle body with the lAC solenoid
disconnected.
Base Timing: Spark advance in degrees before top dead center of the base engine without any
control from the PCM.
Battery: An electric storage device designed to produce a DC voltage by means of an electrochemical
reaction.
Battery Positive Voltage (B l ): The positive voltage from the battery or any circuit connected directly
to the battery. Compare “Vehicle Power (VPWR).”
B/MAP: Barometric/Manifold Absolute Pressure.
BOO: Brake On/Off signal indicates the position of the brake pedal.
Boost Control: PCM control of turbocharger or supercharger input into intake manifold.
BPA: Bypass AlR is the mechanical control of throttle bypass air.
Breakout Box: A service tool that “tees” between the PCM and the 104-pin harness connector. The
breakout box contains test pins that can be probed for EEC system testing.
BTDC: Before Top Dead Center.
CA: Calibration Assembly, containing the operations strategy on EEC-I through EEC-III PCMs.
Camshaft: A shaft on which phased cams are mounted. The camshaft is used to regulate the opening
and closing of the intake and exhaust valves.
Canister: A device designed to hold dry material. An evaporative emission canister contains activated
charcoal which absorbs fuel vapors and holds them until the vapors can be purged at an appropriate
time.
CANP: Canister Purge solenoid controls purging of the EVA P canister.
California ARB: California Air Resource Board is the air quality regulations panel in California.
Carburetor Air Temperature: lntake Air Temperature.
Catalyst: Device in the exhaust stream that converts CO and NOx and HC to water, CO2 and does not
itself change. All catalysts cause chemical reactions without themselves being changed.
Catalytic Converter: An in-line, exhaust system device used to reduce the level of engine exhaust
emissions.
Catalyst Efficiency Monitor: PCM strategy to determine efficiency of catalyst conversion of exhaust
gases.
