GLOSSARY

GND: Ground is an electrical conductor used as a common return for an electrical circuits.

GVW: Gross Vehicle Weight.

Hall Effect: A process where current is passed through a small slice of semi-conductor material at the
same time as a magnetic field to produce a small voltage in the semiconductor.

Hard fault: A fault currently present in the system.

Hardware: The hardware includes the PCM, sensors, switches, actuators, solenoids, interconnecting
terminals and wires.

Harness Diagnostics: Harness tests available from the NGS main menu.

HC: Hydrocarbon.

HDR-CKP: High Data Rate Crankshaft Position sensor.

HFC: High Fan Control controls the high speed cooling fan.

HFP: High Fuel Pump controls the high speed fuel pump.

HLOS: Hardware Limited Operating Strategy is a mode of operation where the PCM replaces output
commands with fixed values in response to microprocessor malfunctions inside the PCM.

HO: High Output.

HO2S (DOWNSTREAM): Heated Oxygen Sensor (formerly HEGO) is an Oxygen Sensor (02S) that is
electrically heated and located downstream of the catalytic converter.

HO2S (UPSTREAM): Heated Oxygen Sensor (formerly HEGO) is an Oxygen Sensor (02S) that is
electrically heated and located upstream of the catalytic converter.

HSC: High Swirl Combustion is a cylinder and piston configuration that causes increased swirling of the
air/fuel mixture in the cylinder to increase combustion and power output.

IAC: Idle Air Control indicates electrical control of throttle bypass air.

IAT: Intake Air Temperature.

IC: lntegrated Circuit.

ICM: Ignition Control Module is the logic module that controls the ignition system.

IDM: Ignition Diagnostic Monitor monitors operation of the ignition system.

IFS: Inertia Fuel Shutoff is a switch that shuts off the fuel delivery system when activated by
predetermined acceleration force.

IGN GND: Ignition Ground.

Ignition: System used to provide high voltage spark for internal combustion engines.

Inspection Maintenance Readiness Code: This DTC (P1 000) is used to indicate that all of the
emission control system monitors have not completed since the computer memory was last cleared.

IMRC: Intake Manifold Runner Control controls airflow through runners in the intake manifold.

Injector: A device for delivering metered pressurized fuel to the intake system or the cylinders.
