Torque sent from the ASF/Pump motor to the ASF unit via the disengage
mechanism is used for the following operation.

Paper loading operation
Like the Stylus C O LO R 440/640/740, A S F of this printer has the m ultiple paper
loading prevention m echanism to provide steady paper loading. This
m echanism prevents a sheet of paper from falling from the paper set
position into the paper path. A paper return lever in the m echanism pushes
paper that m ay have fallen off back onto the hopper. A fter this m otion is
com pleted, the LD roller starts loading paper. The paper loading
m echanism , including the m ultiple paper loading prevention m echanism , is
described in the follow ing steps.
1. W hen the printer pow er is turned on, the A S F/P um p m otor rotates
counterclockw ise to detect A S F hom e position. Then the m otor rotates
clockw ise specified steps to set the LD roller and paper turn lever in place.
(S ee “S tandby S tate” in Figure 2-10.)
2. W hen the paper loading signal is sent from the P C and the Load/E ject
button is pressed, A S F/P um p m otor turns counterclockw ise to let the LD
roller load paper. (See “Paper Pick U p S tate” in Figure 2-10.)
3. W hen the paper is transported to the PF roller, the LD roller stops w here it
loses friction. (See “P F R oller P aper F eed State” in Figure 2-10.)
4. W hen the next print signal is sent and Load/Eject button is pressed, the
A SF /Pum p m otor rotates clockw ise specified steps to set the LD roller and
the paper return lever in place. (S ee “S tandby S tate” in Figure 2-10.)
NOTE: If no print signal is sent for several seconds in step 4, the LD roller and the
paper return lever automatically return to the standby state.
