To ensure optimum function of the crampons (connection to boot
and contact to ground), the correct binding system for the boot
used must be selected.
Soft binding (Fig. 3c): This type of crampon binding can be used
on all shoes that are at least as rigid as trekking boots.
Semi binding (Fig. 3b): For this type of crampon binding the
boots must have a welt at least at the heel end.
Auto binding (Abb. 3a): For this type of crampon binding the
boots must have a welt at the tip and the heel and a non-twisting
sole (suitable for crampons).
To ensure optimum attachment of the crampon to the boot, the
following must be observed:
- Left and right crampons differ (Fig. 4)!
- The buckle should always be on the side of the boot facing away
from the other foot.
- The straps must be long enough to be wrapped around the boot
as shown (Fig. 3a – 3c).
- Length of the crampons:
To ensure optimum connection to the boot, the length of the
crampons must be adjusted as shown in Fig. 5a – f. Attention:
After adjusting the length of the crampon, check that it is firmly
connected to the boot!
- The welts of the boot must be wide enough to provide optimum
support of both the heel lever and the front bail of a semi or
auto binding (Fig. 6a – 6b).
- When moving on level ground, the boot must not move
inside the binding.
Adjusting the crampon, adaptation and size adjustment prior
to first use:
The length of the crampon is adjusted by means of a mechanism
at the heel end. The spring must be pulled up until the pin is no
longer engaged with the holes in the bridge. Then the heel
section can be pulled forward along the bridge (to shorten the
crampon) or backward (to lengthen the crampon). When the
spring is let go, the pin must engage with one of the holes in the
bridge. (Fig. 7)
Criteria for optimum length adjustment see above.
When adapting the crampon to very small boots, the bridge will
protrude beyond the edge of the heel end.
To set the crampon for very small boots, first separate crampon
heel and crampon front from each other (see size adjustment).
The bridge and spring (Fig. 8a) can now be removed. Reinstall
the spring in the bridge seat of the front section the same way it
was fitted to the heel section. Slide the bridge from the rear
through the slot at the rear of the crampon heel and through the
bridge seat of the crampon heel. Now open the spring and slide
the bridge through the bridge seat of the crampon front and
engage it (Fig. 8). Adjust the crampon as described above.
The bridge can be fixed to the bridge seat of the crampon front
in two positions. The more rigid assembly shown in Fig. 9a is
recommended for boots that are meant for use with crampons.
If the boots are soft and the soft binding is used, the natural
rolling action of the boot can be supported by removing the
crampon heel completely from the bridge and then removing the
bridge to the front from the support bracket in the crampon front;
afterward reinsert it into the rear of the two support brackets
