OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
1. Place the DefendAir EX upright on a flat, stable surface.
2. If necessary, connect intake and/or outlet ducting.
3. Plug in to a standard outlet with the correct voltage and
amperage for the unit.
4. Turn the variable-speed switch clockwise until the unit
begins operating. You can adjust the CFM with the vari-
able-speed switch. Listen for proper operation of fan be-
fore leaving the unit unattended.
How the Machine Works
The DefendAir EX is a portable filtration unit. It filters the air to
remove particles, including mold and fungi, by passing it
through a multiple-stage filtration system. Up to three pre-
filters capture larger particles and debris before air passes
through the primary filter. The DefendAir EX can be operated
as either a negative air machine or a standalone air scrubber.
When used as a negative air machine, the DefendAir re-
moves air from a room via ducting as part of the filtration
process. This creates a negative air pressure in the room
and helps prevent contaminants from spreading throughout
the containment area.
When used as a standalone air scrubber, the DefendAir
can be placed in the middle of an affected room without cre-
ating a negative pressure. In this situation, the unit repeated-
ly filters the air inside the room to help lower particulate lev-
els. The efficacy of the DefendAir in helping to lower par-
ticulate levels will depend on the extent to which air within
the affected room is being mixed and placement of the unit
within the room.
How to Use the Controls
The control panel on the DefendAir EX has one rotary
switch and two indicator lights.
VARIABLE SPEED CONTROL:
To decrease airflow, turn knob
to the right. To increase airflow,
turn knob to the left. To power
off, turn knob all the way to the
left.
PRIMARY FILTER LIGHT:
When illuminated, the primary
filter needs to be replaced.
When testing the filter, run the
unit at maximum speed.
PRE-FILTER LIGHT: When
illuminated, the pre-filters need to be replaced. When testing
the filters, run the unit at maximum speed.
ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS
The DefendAir EX is designed to operate on a 230V/50 Hz
electrical connection. Make sure that the electrical outlet is
grounded and that all safety precautions are taken.
MAINTENANCE
Always turn off the power before performing maintenance
procedures. All the service procedures below are to be exe-
cuted with the unit unplugged. Perform before each use or as
needed. Always wear an appropriate NIOSH-approved respi-
rator and, if needed, other personal protective equipment
when servicing or cleaning the DefendAir.
Changing Filters
Check the filters regularly to assure the best performance
from the unit. Test the filters by running the unit at maximum
speed and watching for the filter lights to illuminate. Detach
ducting from both the intake and outlet and check for block-
ages. Always wear an appropriate NIOSH-approved respira-
tor and, if needed, other personal protective equipment when
removing or replacing filters or pre-filters.
PRE-FILTERS: Pre-filter replacement is recommended after
every job to prevent cross-contamination and extend the
service life of the primary filter. Pre-filters should also be
changed whenever the Pre-Filter Change light illuminates
during operation.
To change pre-filters:
1. Open the upper filter access panel on the back of the unit
just below the Dri-Eaz logo.
2. Remove the contaminated filters and discard in accor-
dance with applicable regulations.
3. While the pre-filters are removed, close the filter access
panel and plug the unit in. Briefly turn the unit on and check
to see if the Primary Filter light illuminates for the primary
filter. If it does, replace the primary filter as well. Be sure to
turn the unit off and unplug before continuing.
4. Open the filter access panel and install the new pre-filters.
5. Close the filter access panel.
PRIMARY FILTER: Avoid cross-contamination by replacing
the primary filter after every remediation job. The primary
filter should also be changed whenever the Primary Filter
light illuminates during operation.
To change the primary filter:
1. Detach the back panel by removing the six thumbscrews.
2. Remove the knob and plastic cap that secure the filter in
place.
3. Lift the filter up and out of the unit.
4. Insert the new filter.
5. Secure filter in place with the knob and plastic cap. Be
sure not to over-tighten
6. Reattach back panel with the six thumbscrews.
Cleaning the Unit
Remember to always wear an appropriate NIOSH-approved
respirator and other personal protective equipment when
cleaning or servicing the DefendAir. Clean the unit thor-
oughly after every remediation job to avoid cross-
contamination.
EXTERIOR: Wipe down the exterior housing with any non-
solvent-based cleaner. Pay particular attention to the area
around the air intake duct. Bring back the original factory
shine with an automotive vinyl cleaner or polish.
INTERIOR: Open the filter access panel and detach the back
panel. Remove the dirty filters. Wipe down the interior of the
unit with any non-solvent-based cleaner. Let the unit dry be-
fore installing clean filters. Reattach the back panel and
close the filter access panel.
Inspect the Electrical System
Inspect the electrical cord for damage at regular intervals.
Periodically, detach the back panel and inspect internal wir-
ing for bare wires, insecure fasteners, and discoloration.
Remove and repair any damaged wiring as needed. Failure
to do so may lead to electrical shock or a fire hazard.
