WheelChair Mover Important Operating Procedures
Review of procedures for trainees:
1. Before operating the WheelChair Mover, check jaws and hitches, steering, and
that the battery charge is above 20%. Also, check to be sure all tire and wheels
are in good condition and the brake works. If any problems are identified, do not
operate the machine--remove service key and notify supervisor.
2. When proceeding down a sloped aisle, proceed at a pace that will allow you to
stop WheelChair Mover should the need arise.
3. Never stand or walk in front of a wheelchair being pushed or attempt to stop the
wheelchair by standing in front of the WheelChair Mover.
4. When passing through a narrow area with a wheelchair and patient, allow
enough room between the WheelChair Mover, the wheelchair, the patient, and
any f
ixed object so that you don’t become wedged between them.
5. Never allow anyone to ride on the WheelChair Mover. Slowly stop the
WheelChair Mover and politely ask the person to get off.
6. When approaching employees or pedestrians, slow down and allow them to pass
where possible; otherwise, politely indicate, “Excuse me please, passing through.
Thank you.”
7. If for any reason the WheelChair Mover does not stop properly or is not
completely under your control, press the “O” (off) button on the control panel,
remove the service key and notify your supervisor immediately.
8. When battery levels on the WheelChair Mover control panel indicates 20% or
less, drive it to the designated parking area and plug it into the electrical
receptacle for recharging. This will help to keep the batteries charged.
Remember when moving a wheelchair with the WheelChair Mover, adjust your
speed so that you maintain control of the wheelchair and can react quickly to
pedestrian and vehicle traffic. As you turn corners, slow down, and make sure
that the WheelChair Mover, wheelchair, and patients legs/feet clear objects such
as walls or beds.
9. The speed of the WheelChair Mover is determined by how far the throttle is
pushed. Braking is accomplished by releasing the throttle. The quicker you
release the throttle the faster the WheelChair Mover stops.
10. When driving up to a wheelchair to connect it, set the wheelchair brakes, use the
turtle speed on approach.
11. Always use caution on wet or slippery floors. Stopping distances are greater and
the risk of a slip or fall increases. In these conditions, reduce the speed to an
amount that can be managed safely.
12. Always operate the WheelChair Mover safely and courteously. Do not assume
that pedestrians will see you and stop. Never operate faster than conditions,
obstacles, and patient safety and comfort permit.
13. Be considerate of the patient when operating the WheelChair Mover.
14. Always back down ramps or steep slopes when transporting a patient.
