Cannot receive a fax using Error Correction Mode
(ECM) method
Repeated errors occur when you receive a fax

The sender’s fax machine is not
ECM-compatible.
If the sender’s fax machine is not ECM-compatible, the fax will be
received in the standard mode without error correction.

Action
The reception start speed <
RX
START SPEED
> is set to
33600bps.
Reduce the reception start speed. (See page 171.) If there is a bad line
or connection, reducing the reception start speed may correct the
error.
The sender’s fax machine is not
operating normally.
Contact the sender and check whether his/her fax machine is
operating normally.
Cause

The Alarm lamp is flashing.
If it is flashing, see
“When the Alarm lamp flashes,”
on page 155.
The telephone line is connected to
the
jack.
Reconnect to the
jack. (See
Set-Up Guide.
) When the telephone
line is correctly connected to the machine, the machine stops making
a noise. If you do not hear anything, there is a problem with the
telephone line. Contact your telephone company.
The telephone line type is not set
correctly.
You can still receive faxes even if the telephone line type is not set
correctly. If you can receive but cannot send, check the telephone
line type setting. (See page 83.)
The fax number is not registered
correctly in the directory.
If you are using directory dialing, check that the fax number is
correctly registered. (See page 88.)
The dialed number is wrong.
Check the number and try dialing again.
There was an error during
transmission.
• Check the LCD for an error message. (See page 156.)
• Print the ACTIVITY REPORT and check for an error. (See
page 94.)
The recipient’s fax machine is not
G3-compatible.
Check that the recipient’s fax machine is G3-compatible. If not, you
will be unable to send faxes.
