Preparation of saturated salt solution
3.1. Magnesium chloride Hexahydrate
(rH at 20°C 33%)
Add 900g MgCl2 hexahydrate into the gas wash bottle. Add 200
mL distilled water and heat it up to 40-50 C° under stirring. Set
the final volume to 800 mL. Cool down after 10 minutes to room
temperature. The final solution should contain about 1.5 cm of
undissolved salt on the bottom to ensure the saturation of the
salt solution
3.2. Potassium thiocyanate
(rel. humidity at 20°C 47%)
Add 1000g KSCN into the gas wash bottle. Add 200 mL distilled
water and heat it up to 40-50 C° under stirring. Set the final vol-
ume to 800 mL Cool down after 10 minutes to room tempera-
ture. The final solution should contain about 1.5 cm of undis-
solved salt on the bottom to ensure the saturation of the salt so-
lution
3.3. Sodium chloride
(rel. humidity at 20°C 75%)
Add 360g NaCl into the gas wash bottle. Add 500 mL distilled
water and heat it up to 40-50 C° under stirring. Set the final vol-
ume to 800 mL. Cool down after 10 minutes to room tempera-
ture. The final solution should contain about 1.5 cm of undis-
solved salt on the bottom to ensure the saturation of the salt so-
lution
4.
Preparation of molecular sieve
Remove the top cap of the gas wash bottle. Take out the com-
plete insert with the distribution funnel and remove / slide out all
filters and splash guard plates. Add about 100g of the total of
500 g molecular sieve
*
into the gas wash bottle. Then insert the
distribution funnel and add the rest of molecular sieve (about
400g). Now slide-in the splash guard plates and the filters. Fi-
nally close the gas wash bottle with the top cap.
*
Molecular sieve dehydrate Fluka or Sigma with indicator for
drying gases; beads diameter = 2-5 mm
