Safety
12
Keep the bilges with the minimum water possible.
Do not allow pumps to turn when empty, as this risks damage.
Check visually at regular intervals the operation of each bilge
pump.
Check that the pump inlets or strainers are not blocked.
If there are watertight bulkheads isolating the site forward and aft
fi
tted with valves, these must normally be closed and only opened
to empty water into the main bilge.
The handle for operating the manual pump must remain accessible
at all times.
Keep the seacocks, cockpit drains,
fi
ller points and other opening/
closing mechanisms in the open or closed position as necessary to
minimise the risk of
fl
ooding.
PROCEDURE TO FOLLOW IN THE EVENT OF FLOODING
- Switch on the electric bilge pumps.
- If that is not enough to reduce the water level, ask a member of
the crew to operate the manual pump.
- Determine the nature of the leak by tasting the water and then
decide what procedures to adopt accordingly (fresh water indi-
cates leak in tank, salt water indicates water coming in from out-
side).
ELECTRIC BILGE PUMPS
The electric bilge pumps are switched on
at the instrument panel.
EMERGENCY BILGE PUMP
The manual bilge pump is situated in the cockpit.
