DEFINITION OF THE DESIGN CATEGORIES
Category A :
This boat is designed to sail in conditions where wind may exceed force 8 on the Beau-
fort scale with signi
fi
cant wave heights of 4m and above, and that is largely self-suf
fi
cient.
Abnormal conditions such as hurricanes are excluded.
Such conditions can be encountered on long passages, for example ocean crossings,
or near the coast, when there is no protection from the wind and waves for several
hundreds of nautical miles.
Category B :
This boat is designed to sail in winds not exceeding force 8 on the Beaufort scale and in
corresponding seas (signi
fi
cant wave heights up to and including 4m).
Such conditions can be encountered during offshore passages or near the coast, when
there is no protection from the wind and waves for tens of nautical miles. These condi-
tions can also be encountered on inland seas of a suf
fi
cient size to be able to give rise
to the wave height in question.
Category C :
This boat is designed to sail in winds not exceeding force 6 on the Beaufort scale and in
corresponding seas (signi
fi
cant wave heights up to and including 2m).
Such conditions can be encountered on exposed inland waters, in estuaries and in coas-
tal waters with moderate weather conditions.
Category D :
This boat is designed to sail in winds not exceeding force 4 on the Beaufort scale and in
corresponding seas (occasional waves of 0.5m maximum height).
Such conditions can be encountered on sheltered inland waters and in coastal waters
in good weather.
Note:
Signi
fi
cant wave height means the average height of the highest 1/3rd of the waves,
which corresponds approximately to the wave height estimated by an experienced
observer. Certain waves will be double that height.
