Component Testing
Correct operation of the air pump and the various valves
and switching devices is essential for proper system op-
eration. Use the following procedures to test these parts.
Electronic System Controls
Many vehicles are equipped with secondary air systems
controlled by the PCM, figure 4-9. Generally these sys-
tems utilize electrically operated solenoids to control the
flow of air in the system. Begin diagnosis of these sys-
tems by checking for diagnostic trouble codes. If DTC's
are present, refer to the appropriate Service or Diagnos-
tic Manual for the correct repair procedures.
Gulp Valve
A gulp valve is used on early AIR systems to control
backfiring, figure 4-10. With the engine running at idle,
disconnect the vacuum line at the valve and check for
vacuum. If there is no vacuum to the valve, look for a re-
stricted hose. Reconnect the vacuum line, increase en-
gine speed to 2000 RPM, then quickly close the throttle.
Engine speed should stay high for a moment before re-
turning to idle. If not, or if the engine backfires, replace
the valve.
Next, disconnect the gulp valve discharge hose and
place a finger over the end to seal it off. Increase engine
speed to 2000 RPM, then quickly close the throttle. You
should hear a momentary blast of air from the valve. If
not, replace the valve.
Check Valve
A one-way check valve is used to prevent the reverse
flow of exhaust gasses through the system, figure 4-11,
To test a check valve, remove it and blow air through the
inlet end, then through the outlet end of the valve. The
valve should permit free movement of air through the
inlet, but no air movement in the reverse direction.
