a steady reading after vacuum is applied. Note the time
required for the vacuum gauge to level off to a steady
reading and compare it to specifications.
To check the release operation of the valve, reverse the
pump and gauge connections. When vacuum is applied,
the gauge reading should rise quickly and immediately.
For further testing, refer to the appropriate Service or Di-
agnostic Manual.
EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION (EGR)
SYSTEM
Exhaust gas recirculation systems meter a small amount
of exhaust gas into the intake system, where it dilutes the
air-fuel mixture going to the cylinders. This lowers the
peak combustion temperature to reduce the formation of
oxides of nitrogen (NO
x
).
Original design EGR valves used a spring-loaded di-
aphragm that is activated by a vacuum signal to open or
close an exhaust passage, figure 4-5. Most latemodel
systems use a PWM solenoid or stepper motor to actu-
ate the pintle and control the flow of exhaust gasses, fig-
ure 4-6. If the EGR valve fails to open when it should, ex-
pect:
• Increases in NO
x
formation
• Pinging and detonation
• Reduced fuel mileage
If the EGR valve leaks, expect:
• Rough idling
• Stalling
• Hesitation
On a speed density system, an EGR leak may cause a
rich fuel mixture because it lowers manifold vacuum.
System Testing
Although each manufacturer has features unique to their
systems, the function of any EGR vacuum diaphragm
valve can be quickly checked as follows:
1. Start and run the engine until it is at normal operat-
ing temperature.
2. Connect a tachometer to the engine.
3. Disconnect the EGR valve vacuum hose. Connect
a vacuum gauge to the hose and a vacuum pump
to the valve.
4. Accelerate the engine to 2000 RPM and read the
gauge to verify that vacuum is available to the EGR
valve.
5. With the engine running at 2000 RPM, apply 8 to 10
in-Hg (55 to 69 kPa) of vacuum to the valve. The
engine RPM should drop from 1500 RPM to 1350
RPM. This tests flow through the valve. Some EGR
