For instructions, refer to the PC or terminal user manual.

2. Insert the nine-pin receptacle end of the console cable into the console connector

on the 8393 SF/CPU or 8394 SF/CPU module.

3. Attach the nine-pin plug end of the cable to the serial communications port on the

back of the PC or terminal.

Connecting a network management station to the SF/CPU

Use the management port to connect the switch to a network management station for out-of-
band management using a Web browser or Device Manager.

1. Connect an Ethernet cable to the network management station. For 10 Mbit/s

connections, you can use Category 3, 4, or 5 copper unshielded twisted pair

(Ethernet) cable. Use only Category 5 UTP cable to connect ports that operate at

100 Mbit/s.

2. Connect the other end of the cable to the RJ-45 jack on the 8393 SF/CPU or 8394

SF/CPU module.

Connecting and managing cables

The Ethernet Routing Switch 8310 and 8306 chassis ships with cable management brackets.
Use the cable management brackets to keep groups of cable clusters fastened and out of the
way, but accessible for maintenance. If you do not install these brackets, see

Gather the communications equipment and cables to attach to the Ethernet Routing Switch
8300 modules. If you do not have the proper cables, contact your network administrator.

To facilitate card installation and removal, bundle the cables for each slot. Connect, label, and
bundle the cables for each module.

1. Connect the appropriate cable to the module.
2. Route the cable to the appropriate cable management bracket and channel as

shown in the following figure.
