Job Site Safety
Site conditions vary widely. Your machine may not be
equipped with all devices mentioned. Local or federal
safety codes and the safety rules of your organization
may add other safety requirements.
Moving Machinery
The following conditions create a hazard for persons on
the ground in the work area.
•
The 6710D is a remotely-controlled machine.
•
Several machines and operators may be at work in
the same area.
•
Machines working in the area are not likely to travel
in predictable paths.
•
Visibility is limited by the stacks of material being
processed and the size of the machines.
•
You may not be able to hear the approach of a mov-
ing machine because several engines may be run-
ning at the same time.
To avoid injury in the work area:
•
Do not enter the work area unless you have a spe-
cific purpose.
•
Make yourself visible by wearing highly visible
clothing.
•
Make your presence known to all the machine oper-
ators in the area.
•
Do not make random or unexpected moves.
•
Walk, do not run.
Flying Objects Hazard
The 6710D design minimizes risks of flying objects, but
rocks, metals, knots and other very hard objects in the
feed material can sometimes be thrown as far as 300 feet
(100 meters). This could result in serious injury if a
heavy or fast moving object were to strike an unpro-
tected person. Flying objects are a continuing hazard at
any time material is being processed or the rotor is turn-
ing.
Do not increase engine speed or engage the clutch when
the compression roll housing is in its fully raised posi-
tion. Material may be caught by the rotor and thrown
out of the feed hopper. Use the debris curtain to guard
against flying or thrown material hazards.
1
CAUTION
Avoid standing near the radiator. The fans
reverse on a timed cycle to blow dust and debris
from the radiator. Wear eye protection.
Noise Levels
Always wear hearing protection within 50 feet (15 m) of
the machine when it is running. The maximum sound
pressure is
106 dBA at the center of the machine on the
left side.
This decibel data can only come close to noise condi-
tions at your operating site. Take sound level measure-
ments of each site where the 6710D is operated. Use
hearing protection when working near the 6710D.
Noise levels can vary widely, depending on the type of
material being processed, the rate of processing, the
structures near the 6710D, and the position of the lis-
tener relative to the noise source. Some directions away
from the machine are more quiet than others. Barriers,
such as piled materials and building walls, can absorb or
reflect sounds, which can reduce or increase the noise
levels.
Noise levels drop with greater distance from the sound
source, eventually reaching safe levels.
The noise emission level of the 6710D has been deter-
mined following the guidelines of ISO 3744:194
“Acoustics—Determination of sound power levels of
noise sources using sound pressure.”
