2.
Set SPA marker 2 = delta marker. Set delta frequency = 1 kHz.
3.
Note the marker 2 delta level readout, dB.
4.
Calculate: Peak phase deviation, rad = mod index = 2*10^((delta dB)/20)
5.
Record Peak phase deviation. Its value should be close to 0.0010 rad.
Int Low Noise ΦM Min Deviation
(Do this test if the optional internal modulation source is installed).
Setup is essentially the same as for the Ext Low Noise
Φ
M Min Phase Deviation test, except that the external
mod source is not needed; Int Phase Mod is used instead. FSWP setup is the same.
This test verifies that, at 5 GHz carrier frequency, Int Low Noise Phase Mod, set to minimum phase deviation,
will produce 1 mrad (nominal) deviation. At other carrier frequencies min phase deviation setting scales by
factors of 10 in rough proportion to Nmod.
Test Setup
Connect equipment as shown in
FSWP:
Tab “Spectrum”. This will close the previous measurement window and activate the RF Spectrum
display.
Span = 5 kHz, RBW = 100 Hz, VBW = 10 Hz, Trigger = Continuous.
External Function Generator:
Channel OFF.
MG362x1A:
Phase Mod OFF, Int Low Noise Phase mod mode, DC Coupled,
Phase Deviation = 1 mrad, Mod Rate = 1 kHz. Set Int Phase Mod ON.
Test Procedure
1.
Set SPA marker 1 = normal. Set marker 1 freq = 5 GHz.
2.
Set SPA marker 2 = delta marker. Set delta frequency = 1 kHz.
3.
Note the marker 2 delta level readout, dB.
4.
Calculate: Peak phase deviation, rad = mod index = 2*10^((delta dB)/20)
5.
Record Peak phase deviation. Its value should be close to 0.0010 rad.
4-21 Phase Mod - Flatness Tests
The Phase Mod - flatness tests are as follows:
Ext Low Noise ΦM Flatness and 3 dB BW
This test measures modulation flatness and BW up to 10 MHz mod rate using a peak phase deviation of 0.2
radians. PM flatness is tested at 2.6, 5, 10, and 20 GHz carrier frequencies as a sampling across the YIG
oscillator 2-20 GHz tuning range, and at modulation multiplication ratio, Nmod, = 1. This sampling also
represents PM flatness for carrier frequencies < 2 GHz or > 20 GHz, due to frequency division or
multiplication, i.e. Nmod
≠
1. (See chart in section B1 to see how Nmod varies with carrier frequency).
Required FSWP demod BW increases with mod rate such that Demod BW
≥
3.3*(Mod rate)*(1 + Phase
Deviation, rad). Phase deviation measurement uses RMS rather than peak detection to reduce noise
sensitivity.
Φ
M flatness dB = 20*log((Phase deviation)/(Phase deviation at 1 kHz rate))
