Chapter 5
Running an Autotest 55
Locating faults
The WireScope 350 measurement plots contain high resolution signal phase
information that can be used to map the location of Near End Crosstalk (NEXT)
and Return Loss noise coupling along the tested cabling run. This capability is
especially important when you need to troubleshoot a failing cabling run.
To view the fault locator screen, select either NEXT or Return Loss from the list
of measurements on the Test Data screen. Press the
Locator
button.
By default, the Locator screens open with the pair or pair combination selected
which has the worst margin. You can select other pairs or pair combinations by
touching in the list box.
You can move the tape to measure the distance to any peak on the plot by either
touching in the plot area or by using the
key.
NEXT and Return Loss peaks often occur at connection points in the cabling
run. For this reason, the locator screen can be useful for finding the distance to
any intermediate connections in the cabling run.
