Starter Motor
Brush Holder
Brush Holder Insulation Test
Check for continuity between each brush holder
and the base using a multimeter
(Figure 10-21)
.
The multimeter should not indicate continuity.
If the multimeter indicates continuity, replace the
brush holder.

Brush Spring Test
Test the spring force for each brush spring
(Figure 10-22)
. Replace the brush spring if the
force is not within the range.
Specifications on page 10-5 for the service limit.

Solenoid Switch
If the starter motor becomes wet, replace the
solenoid switch even if the solenoid switch
assembly function is normal.
Shunt Coil Continuity Test
Check for continuity between the “S” terminal and
the switch body using a multimeter
(Figure 10-23)
.
The multimeter should indicate continuity.
If the multimeter does not indicate continuity,
replace the solenoid switch.

Series Coil Continuity Test
Check for continuity between the “S” and “M”
terminals using a multimeter
(Figure 10-24)
. The
multimeter should indicate continuity.
If the multimeter does not indicate continuity,
replace the solenoid switch.
