Checking the starter motor pinion

1.

Check the pinion teeth. Replace the pin-
ion if cracked or worn.

Check the pinion for smooth operation.

NOTE:

Turn the pinion counterclockwise to check
that it operates smoothly and turn it clockwise
to check that it locks in place.

Check the commutator. Clean with 600-
grit sandpaper and compressed air if
dirty.
