b. Install new O-rings. Lubricate the new
O-rings with lithium soap grease and install
them into the hub.
c. Install the clutch hub onto the damper studs
and install two new lockplates (B,
Figure 36
).
d. Install and evenly tighten the nuts.
e. Torque the nuts to 62 N•m (45 ft.-lb.) and
bend a locktab against a flat of each nut (A,
Figure 36
).
Inspection
1. Inspect the bearings as described in
Wheel In
spection
in this chapter. If necessary, remove and
replace the bearings as described in this chapter.
2. Check the seal (
Figure 38
) for damage that
might allow dirt to enter. If any seal is damaged, re-
place the bearings as a set.
3. Inspect the wheel dampers for cracks, wear or
other signs of deterioration. Replace the dampers as
a set.
4. Inspect the splines (C,
Figure 36
) on the final
gear clutch hub. If there is damage, inspect the mat-
ing splines on the final gear assembly (
Figure 39
).
LACED WHEEL SERVICE
The laced or wire wheel assembly consists of a
rim, spokes, nipples and hub (containing the wheel
bearings, distance collars and seals).
Loose or improperly tightened spokes can cause
hub damage. Periodically inspect the wheel assem-
bly for loose, broken or missing spokes, rim dam-
age and runout. Wheel bearing service is described
in this chapter.
Component Condition
Wheels are subjected to a significant amount of
punishment. Inspect the wheels regularly for lateral
(side-to-side) and radial (up and down) runout,
even spoke tension, and visible damage. When a
wheel has a noticeable wobble, it is out of true.
Loose spokes usually cause this, but it can be
caused by impact damage.
Truing a wheel corrects the radial and lateral run-
out to bring the wheel back into specification. The
condition of the individual wheel components will
affect the ability to successfully true the wheel.
Note the following:
1. Spoke condition—Do not attempt to true a
wheel with bent or damaged spokes. Doing so
places an excessive amount of tension on the spoke
and rim. The spoke may break and/or pull through
the hole in the rim. Inspect spokes carefully and re-
place any that are damaged.
