6. Rev the engine a couple of times to see if it set-
tles down to the set speed. Readjust as necessary.
7. Shut off the engine and disconnect the portable
tachometer.
Throttle Cable Adjustment
Always check the throttle cables before making
any carburetor adjustments. Too much free play
causes delayed throttle response; too little free play
causes unstable idling.
Check the throttle cables from the throttle grip to
the carburetors. Make sure they are not kinked or
chafed. Replace the cables if necessary.
Make sure the throttle grip rotates smoothly from
fully closed to fully open. Check free play with the
handlebars at the center, full-left and full-right
steering positions.
Check free play at the throttle grip flange (
Figure
37
). Free play should be within the range specified
in
Table 5
. If adjustment is necessary, perform the
following:
1. Remove the rider and passenger seats as de-
scribed in Chapter Fourteen.
2. Remove the fuel tank, air filter housing and
surge tank as described in Chapter Eight.
3. At the handlebar, make sure the throttle cable
locknut and adjuster are tight.
4. At the carburetor assembly, loosen the pull cable
locknut (A,
Figure 38
).
5. Rotate the pull cable adjuster (B,
Figure 38
) un-
til the correct amount of free play is achieved.
6. Tighten the locknut securely.
NOTE
If the correct amount of free play
cannot be achieved at the carburetor,
additional adjustment can be ob
tained at the adjuster on the handle
bar.
7. At the handlebar, loosen the throttle cable ad-
juster locknut (A,
Figure 39
).
8. Rotate the adjuster (B,
Figure 39
) in either di-
rection until the correct amount of free play is
achieved. Tighten the adjuster locknut.
WARNING
If idle speed increases when the han
dlebar is turned to right or left, check
the throttle cable routing. Do not ride
the motorcycle in this unsafe condi
tion.
9. Start the engine and let it idle in neutral. Listen to
the engine speed while turning the handlebar from
steering lock to steering lock. If idle speed changes
as the handlebar is turned, the throttle cable is
