nect the voltmeter negative test lead to the
harness side of the black bullet connector.
e. Turn the main switch on. On models with a
light switch, turn it on also.
f. If the voltmeter does not read battery voltage,
the wiring between the main switch and the
taillight/brake light connector is faulty. Make
the necessary repairs.
Brake Light Test
1. Set a voltmeter to the 20 DC volt range.
2A. On XVS1100 models, perform the following:
a. Remove the nut and washer from each hous-
ing bolt.
b. Pull the housing from the taillight bracket.
c. Disconnect the taillight harness connector
and remove the taillight bracket.
d. Connect the voltmeter positive test lead to the
yellow terminal (C,
Figure 75
) in the harness
side of the taillight/brake light connector;
connect the voltmeter negative test lead to the
black terminal (B).
e. Turn the main switch on. On models with a
light switch, turn it on also.
f. Apply the brake lever or pedal.
g. If the voltmeter does not read battery voltage,
the wiring between the main switch and the
taillight/brake light connector is faulty. Make
the necessary repairs.
2B. On XVS1100A models, remove the taillight
housing as follows:
a. Remove the license plate from the bracket.
b. Disconnect the black and yellow taillight bul-
let connectors inside the housing on the li-
cense plate bracket (
Figure 74
).
c. Connect the voltmeter positive test lead to the
harness side of the yellow bullet connector;
connect the voltmeter negative test lead to the
harness side of the black bullet connector.
e. Turn the main switch on. On models with a
light switch, turn it on also.
f. Apply the brake lever or pedal.
g. If the voltmeter does not read battery voltage,
the wiring between the main switch and the
taillight/brake light connector is faulty. Make
the necessary repairs.
Taillight Sub-Harness Connector
The taillight sub-harness connector is beneath the
ignition plate. Perform the following to access this
connector during taillight/brake light troubleshoot-
ing.
1. Remove the seats and ignitor plate as described
in Chapter Fourteen.
2. Disconnect the five-pin taillight sub-harness
connector (A,
Figure 76
) from its harness mate.
3. If necessary, release the wire from the clamp (B,
Figure 76
) on the mud guard.
Auxiliary Light Test
(Europe and Australia Models)
1. Check the continuity of the auxiliary light bulb
and socket.
2. Set a voltmeter to the 20 DC volt range.
3. Backprobe the auxiliary light bullet connectors.
Connect the positive test probe to the harness side
of the blue/red connector; connect the negative test
probe to the harness side of the black connector.
4. Turn on the main switch and the light switch.
The voltmeter should read battery voltage.
