24. If necessary, remove the intake manifold and its
O-ring from the cylinder head.
NOTE
An exhaust manifold is not used on the
front cylinder.
25. If necessary, remove the two manifold nuts (A,
Figure 19
) and remove the exhaust manifold (B) from
the rear cylinder. Also remove and discard the exhaust
gasket. A new gasket must be used during assembly.
26. Inspect the cylinder head as described in this
section.
Installation
NOTE
If both cylinder heads have been re
moved, completely install the rear cyl
inder head, then install the front head.
1. Remove the shop cloth from the cylinder.
2. Install the two dowels into the cylinder (A,
Fig-
ure 18
).
3. Install a new cylinder head gasket onto the cylin-
der block (B,
Figure 18
) so the
5EL
mark faces up.
NOTE
The front chain guide is directional.
The narrow end of the guide must sit
in the seat in the crankcase.
4. Lower the narrow end of the front cam chain
guide (A,
Figure 20
) through the cam chain tunnel
in the cylinder block, and set the guide into the seat
in the crankcase. See
Figure 17
. Make sure the
guide’s raised edge faces the cam chain.
5. Lower the cylinder head part way down the cyl-
inder studs, and feed the cam chain and safety wire
up through the cam chain tunnel in the head.
6. Carefully lower the cylinder head until it is
seated on the cylinder block. While lowering the
head into place, note the following:
a. The top of the front chain guide must be cap-
tured by the cavity in the cylinder head.
b. Make sure the two locating dowels engage
the cylinder head.
7. Pull the cam chain taut and make sure it still prop-
erly engages the sprocket on the cam chain drive as-
sembly. Secure the cam chain safety wire to the engine.
8. Install and finger-tighten the two cylinder head
bolts (A,
Figure 21
).
9. Lower the cylinder head cover brackets (
Figure 16
)
over the cylinder studs. Check the marks made during
removal and install each bracket in its original location.
10. Turn the cylinder head nuts (A,
Figure 22
) onto
the cylinder studs and thread the cylinder head cap
nut (B) into place in the spark plug well. Install a
washer with the cap nut. Finger-tighten the nuts at
this time.
CAUTION
The cylinder head fasteners must be
evenly tightened in sequence. The head
