The material
When an open spool is not used, the filament gradually picks up moisture and can become increasingly difficult to
print within a few weeks. Many materials are also quite sensitive to UV rays which will make them more and more
brittle and problematic. The most common symptoms: under-extrusions, thread breakage and untimely clogging.
The print quality will also suffer (rougher surface, bubbles...). Store your reels away from light, in a rather dry, cool
place (-25°C) and in a closed bag with anti-humidity tablets. Monitoring the humidity level may be necessary
depending on your environment, but in any case, an open coil must be consumed as soon as possible to reduce the
risk of problems.
Cleaning
Regularly clean your machines and remove any waste that may accumulate inside. These are quite dangerous for
the belts and bearings if they were to get caught in them. Also blow the inlets of the fans to evacuate the
accumulated dust (motors, electronic box, power supply), and of course, clean / blow regularly the drive of the
extruder to prevent it from accumulating too much dust and waste which will reduce the grip on the filament. Never
spray lacquer inside the machine, it will stick in particular to the axes and will quickly deteriorate the ball bearings
of the linear movements, and clog the cooling fans which will do their job less and less.
Lubrication
Lubricating the pins
and bushings is advisable from time to time when you feel the pins become a little “dry” to the touch.
Grease the axles along their entire lengths, spreading the grease over the entire surface, then move the axle in question
several times so that the ball bearings collect grease and become lubricated inside. Use PTFE liquid grease and avoid
standard mechanical grease which will tend to dry out and become sticky, which will decrease the performance of your
machine and may even cause malfunctions.
