GLOSSARY
Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)
: Protocol used to convert an IP address into its
physical network address.
Data plane
: Also known as a
forwarding plane,
it carries data packets between ports
of devices connected in the network.
Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP):
This
is a field in the header of an IP
packet that serves to manage network traffic and provide Quality of Service (QoS).
Flow mod
: A flow-mod message is sent by the controller, when it has received
matching packet-in messages from a sending and receiving port of a switch or
multiple switches. Once the learning is complete, the controller installs flows in the
relevant switches.
MAC Address:
Also known as the physical address, MAC is a unique address that is
assigned to a network adaptor and is linked to the hardware of the network adaptor.
It is embedded in the NIC (Network Interface Card) of a computer. An ARP translates
an IP address to a MAC address.
Management plane
: Enables an administrator to configure devices in the network
and control flow of traffic.
OpenFlow
: Protocol used for message communication between an SDN controller
and an OpenFlow switch. When an OpenFlow switch receives a packet for which
there is no matching entry in the flow table, it sends a packet-in message to the
controller. In response, the controller sends a packet-out message to the switch
directing how the packet should be handled.
OF Connection Time
: Time taken by each switch to establish connection with the
controller until handshake with the controller is complete.
OpenFlow Channel
: Interface between the OpenFlow switch and the controller.
OpenFlow Switch
: OpenFlow protocol based devices that forward packets in a
Software Defined Network.
Packet-in message:
This is
sent by
a switch to the controller to get directions as to
how to handle a packet when there is no matching entry in the flow table.
Packet-out message:
Packets sent
as a response by the controller to a packet-in
message that is sent from a switch.
