- OUTDOOR testing and use

1.  Find an area on the ground outside where there is no metal.

2.  Place the material you want the detector to find (such as a gold ring or a coin) on the ground.

NOTE: If you are using a valuable metal sample such as gold to test the detector, mark the area where you

placed the item, to help you retrieve it later. Do not place it in tall grass or weeds.

3.  Switch on the detector and set the volume at 2/3 to the right.

4.  Hold down the PUSH button and slowly turn the TUNING knob left or right until the pointer on the VU meter

points at 0. Release the PUSH button. At this time, the TARGET indicator LED turns off.

5.  Hold the search coil level to the ground about 2” above the surface, slowly move the search coil over the

area where you placed the sample, sweeping the search coil in a side-to-side motion.

Fine-Tuning the Detector

Fine-tuning your detector with the discriminator will affect the detection of metal objects. Discrimination is the
detector’s ability to differentiate between types of metal, i.e. ferrous and non-ferrous. As you set the discriminator

to higher levels, the detector will not signal smaller metal objects. Turn the DISCRIMINATION knob to the
minimum if you want the detector to signal smaller objects. Note that you must adjust the discrimination level each

time you use the detector in a different area.

Pinpointing a Target

Accurately pinpointing a target makes digging it up easier, but it takes practice. We suggest you practise finding

sample on your own property before you start searching other locations.
Follow these steps to pinpoint a target:

1.  When the detector detects a buried target, continue sweeping the search coil over the target in a narrowing

side-to-side motion.

2.  Make a visual note of the exact spot on the ground where the detector beeps.
3.  Stop the search coil directly over this point on the ground. Then move the search coil straight forward away

from you and straight back towards you a couple of times and make another visual note.

4.  Repeat steps 1-3 at a right angle to the previous search line. Make an “X” mark on the ground. The target

will be directly below the “X” at the point of the beep response.
NOTE: Slow and shorten your sweeping motions if trash in the soil makes the detector give false signals.

Recently buried coins might not respond the same as coins buried for a longer period of time because of
oxidation. Buried nails, nuts, bolts and other ferrous objects oxidize and create a halo effect. This effect is

caused by natural elements and oxidation, making it very hard to detect a buried object with accuracy.

False Signals

Because the detector is very sensitive, trash-induced and other sources of interference might affect the signals

picked up. The key to handling these types of signals is to search for only those targets generating a strong,
repeatable signal. As you sweep the search coil over the soil, learn to recognize the difference between the

signals and scan only a small area at a time using slow, overlapping sweeps.

Important Note

No detector is 100% accurate. Various conditions will influence metal detection: the angle and depth at which the

object is buried in the ground, the size of the object, the iron contents of the object, etc.
