c. Insert a strong wire or rod into the drain port, and briskly stir the fluid while it
is draining. This will stop bulky solids from blocking the drain port causing
liquid to remain in the pump. Flush the pump with clean water to remove
leftover solids.
E. CHECKING THE BEARING TEMPERATURE
Friction generated heat normally causes bearings to run at higher than normal
temperatures.
Normal temperatures for bearings range between 160º F (71º C) and 180º F (82º C).
Avoid testing bearing temperatures by hand because the measurement is inaccurate.
Instead, determine the temperature of the bearings by touching a contact-type
thermometer to the bearing housing then document the temperature for accurate
record keeping.
Bearings are nearing the point of failure when there is a sudden rise in bearing
temperature. Check for adequate viscosity of the bearing lubricant and be sure it is
at the appropriate level as noted in Section VI, LUBRICATION. Incorrect positioning
of the shaft can cause overheating of the bearings. Too much vibration can also
cause the bearings to overheat.
During initial pump start-up, the bearings may seem to operate at higher than normal
temperatures, however, continuing pump operation should reduce the temperatures
to normal operating range.
