Use a feeler or taper gauge between coupling halves every 90º to align non-
spider type couplings. The coupling is only in perfect alignment when hubs
are equidistant to each other at every point. (Refer to manufacturers
instructions).
Ensure the coupling adjustment is parallel by laying a straightedge across the
top of both coupling rims, along the side and the bottom. The coupling is in
an accurate horizontal parallel alignment when the straightedge lies evenly
on both halves of the coupling.
When the coupling is incorrectly aligned, use a feeler gauge between the
coupling and the straightedge to measure the amount of skew in the
alignment. Realign the coupling according to the coupling manufacturer’s
specification.
4. V-Belt Drives
Both the power source and the pump
must
be parallel when using V-belt
drives. A straightedge placed along the pulleys’ sides will help determine the
correct alignment of the pulleys (Figure 20).
Be sure the belts are matched in drive systems using two or more belts.
Mismatched belts will cause wear and a shorter belt life.

Always tighten drive belts to the belt manufacturer’s specifications. Belts will
slip if they are too loose, and there will be excessive power loss and potential
bearing failure if they are too tight.
Excessive pump speed may harm both the pump and its power source so
always use pulleys that correspond to the correct speed ratio.
